What GPIO means

GPIO pins let firmware read digital inputs or drive digital logic signals. Pin capabilities differ by ESP32 chip and board, so the exact board pin map and schematic are the source of truth.

Plan pins before wiring

Before wiring, create a pin table with signal name, direction, peripheral function, expected voltage and connected device. This catches conflicts before hardware is powered.

GPIO does not replace a power driver

GPIO is logic, not a power output for pumps, solenoids or motors. High-current loads need a suitable driver, external supply and protection selected from the real load specification.

Board-specific example: Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-S3

This documentation-based example uses the base XIAO ESP32-S3 (SKU 113991114), not a generic ESP32 pinout. The mappings below come from the Seeed pin map; they are not a report of an ITHutir hardware test.

Reproduce the pin-map review before wiring

With the board unpowered, identify its exact model and revision. Open the manufacturer pin map, find D4, and record GPIO5 and SDA in your worksheet. Repeat for D5: GPIO6 and SCL. Compare these entries with your firmware pin configuration. The expected documentation result is two matching mappings, not a measured electrical result.

• Do not confuse board labels D4/D5 with chip GPIO4/GPIO5.
• Verify signal voltage limits, pull-ups, peripheral conflicts and startup state against the exact board and connected device documentation.
• Leave power disconnected until every required field is resolved.
